DC to DC converter

A DC to DC converter is a power converter which accepts a DC input voltage and produces a DC output voltage. Usually, the output voltage is different from the input voltage.



DC to DC converter is important to devices that use batteries such as cellular phones and laptop computers. Such devices often have different parts requiring different voltages. And as the batteries drain, it’s voltage also changes. The DC to DC converter is able to convert one voltage to another, such as increases voltage from a partially lowered voltage batteries. Thus, it saves the need to use multiple batteries.



There are two types of conversion methods, electronic and electrochemical conversions. Electronic converters include two types of converters, a linear converter, and a switched-mode converter. A linear regulator decreases the input voltage to a lower output voltage. Linear conversion is inefficient but cheap and reliable. It can also provide a low-noise output voltage. Yet, it cannot generate higher voltages than their input, and large currents. A linear regulator decreases the input voltage to a lower output voltage. A switch-mode DC to DC converter converts one voltage to another by storing the input energy and releasing the energy at a different voltage output. This method is more efficient, but is more expensive and complex. It can be done in two ways, through magnetic conversion or capacitive conversion.



A magnetic converter stores the input into a magnetic component. It can control output voltage, though it can also control input corrent, the output corrent, or maintaining a constant power. Usually, the term “DC to DC converter refers to this type of converters. A capacitive converter uses alternately connecting capacitors. It is also called a “charge pump converters because it operates on discrete quantities of charge.
